| ZOO’S MALE LION DIES June 2, 2005 BIRMINGHAM The Birmingham Zoo’s only male was humanely euthanized Tuesday evening at 18 years of age. Maynard had been a zoo resident since 1988. Preliminary necropsy results indicate that age-related complications contributed to his recent decline. Maynard’s mate, 18-year-old Sheba, survives and will remain at the Birmingham Zoo. In the next year, the Zoo will add four additional lions, as planned before Maynard’s death. |
